The towns near the iconic southern tip of Africa rely heavily on groundwater. But these water resources are under pressure due to rapid population growth.

Six years ago, the Nuwejaars Wetlands Special Management Area initiative received vital support from partners, including WWF South Africa and the Overberg District Municipality, to clear woody invasive alien trees from the local wetlands, with extraordinary results: Improved replenishment of groundwater for the towns and the spectacular return of biodiversity.

This is one of many great initiatives in the area contributing to the KMGBF targets.
