This is the second article in a three-part series focusing on <\/em>Nature Photography Day<\/em><\/a>, celebrated every year on June 15<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Nature is how I reconnect, recharge and find inspiration in my day to day life. Living in the countryside, I have been fortunate enough to be enveloped by nature. However, while I always had access to mountains, forests and lakes, I never took full advantage of my surroundings\u2014that is until I picked up my first camera. What began as a hobby, quickly turned into a passion. All of a sudden, I was hiking nearly every day with my camera in hand. Being able to capture nature\u2019s beauty and share it with others is so invigorating. This passion helped me to seek out new locations to photograph, which eventually led me to discover many hidden gems in my community that I never knew about.<\/p>\n

Observing the curiosity and appreciation other people have for my photographs led me to want to do more with this new skill. Why not use this medium of communication to tell a story or to educate others on something I am passionate about? That\u2019s exactly what I did.<\/p>\n

Last summer, I took part in an Arctic expedition as a staff member for Students on Ice<\/a>. This Canadian organization brings together youth and educators from various backgrounds, from all around the world on expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. I was lucky enough to be part of the media team on the ship as the assistant producer. My passion for photography also gave me the opportunity to be an expedition photographer. Capturing images of not only the beauty of the Arctic but of what I was learning and experiencing had me extremely fulfilled.<\/p>\n

Now, when somebody asks me if the ice is really melting in the poles, I can show them the images of the glacier I took in Sirmilik National Park in Nunavut. I can explain to them how this glacier has receded to the point that we had to hike to get to it, whereas historically it used to be right at the water\u2019s edge. Images like these are not simply beauty shots but lived-experiences with educational components that I can share with others.<\/p>\n

This expedition was eye-opening and had me seeking similar opportunities elsewhere. For this reason, I applied to a program called Ocean Bridge<\/a>, where youth from across Canada engage in ocean literacy by taking part in rural and city-based expeditions, as well as initiate their own local service projects in their communities. My intention going into this program was to build on my ocean education and on my own network of like-minded youth who are equally as passionate about the protection of nature as I am.<\/p>\n

Within this program, I decided to focus my local service project on keeping plastics out of waterways. While I do live in the country, I am also close to the nation\u2019s capital. Thus, the focus of my project had to be something that both communities could relate to. People who live in the city may feel a disconnect to nature, as a majority are surrounded by more concrete than green space. I had to think of something tangible that visibly affects those living in both environments, hence the focus on plastics.<\/p>\n

For my main project, I will do a photo gallery based on images which demonstrate what I have learned from not only the expeditions but also my experiences through my local community service projects. The goal of this gallery is to tell a story through these images and have people come away feeling as though they feel empowered to take action themselves.<\/p>\n

When I first picked up my camera two years ago, I would have never guessed it would have led me to conduct my own ocean literacy gallery. While the future is uncertain, and the expeditions may or may not happen this year, I will still be moving forward with my project. It is important to feel a connection to the land and see nature as something that needs to be nurtured and protected.<\/p>\n

Les changements climatiques: sensibiliser \u00e0 travers une lentille<\/strong><\/h2>\n

La nature est la fa\u00e7on dont je me reconnecte, me recharge et trouve l’inspiration au quotidien. Vivant \u00e0 la campagne, j’ai eu la chance d’\u00eatre envelopp\u00e9 par la nature. Cependant, bien que j’aie toujours eu acc\u00e8s aux montagnes, aux for\u00eats et aux lacs, je n’ai jamais profit\u00e9 pleinement de mon environnement, c’est-\u00e0-dire jusqu’\u00e0 ce que je touche \u00e0 ma premi\u00e8re cam\u00e9ra. Ce qui a commenc\u00e9 comme un passe-temps s’est rapidement transform\u00e9 en passion. Tout \u00e0 coup, je faisais de la randonn\u00e9e presque tous les jours avec mon appareil photo \u00e0 la main. Pouvoir capturer la beaut\u00e9 de la nature et la partager avec les autres est tellement revigorant. Cette passion m’a aid\u00e9 \u00e0 rechercher de nouveaux endroits \u00e0 photographier, ce qui m’a finalement amen\u00e9 \u00e0 d\u00e9couvrir de nombreux joyaux cach\u00e9s dans ma communaut\u00e9, que je ne connaissais pas avant.<\/p>\n

L’observation de la curiosit\u00e9 et de l’appr\u00e9ciation des autres pour mes photographies m’a amen\u00e9 \u00e0 vouloir en faire plus pour d\u00e9velopper cette nouvelle comp\u00e9tence. Pourquoi ne pas utiliser ce moyen de communication pour raconter une histoire ou \u00e9duquer les autres sur quelque chose qui me passionne? C\u2019est exactement ce que j\u2019ai fait.<\/p>\n

L’\u00e9t\u00e9 dernier, j’ai particip\u00e9 \u00e0 une exp\u00e9dition dans l’Arctique en tant que membre du personnel de Students on Ice. Cette organisation canadienne rassemble des jeunes et des \u00e9ducateurs de divers horizons, du monde entier, lors d’exp\u00e9ditions en Arctique et en Antarctique. J’ai eu la chance de faire partie de l’\u00e9quipe des m\u00e9dias sur le navire en tant que productrice adjointe. Ma passion pour la photographie m’a \u00e9galement donn\u00e9 l’opportunit\u00e9 d’\u00eatre photographe d’exp\u00e9dition. Capturer des images non seulement de la beaut\u00e9 de l’Arctique, mais de ce que j’apprenais et vivais m’a permis de m\u2019\u00e9panouir.<\/p>\n

\"\"Maintenant, quand quelqu’un me demande si la glace fond vraiment dans les p\u00f4les, je peux leur montrer les images du glacier que j’ai pris dans le parc national Sirmilik au Nunavut. Je peux leur expliquer comment ce glacier a recul\u00e9 au point que nous avons d\u00fb faire de la randonn\u00e9e pour y arriver, alors qu’autrefois il se trouvait juste au bord de l’eau. Des images comme celles-ci ne sont pas simplement des photos repr\u00e9sentant la beaut\u00e9, mais aussi des exp\u00e9riences v\u00e9cues avec des composantes \u00e9ducatives, que je peux partager avec d’autres.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Cette exp\u00e9dition m’a ouvert les yeux et m’a fait rechercher des opportunit\u00e9s similaires ailleurs. Pour cette raison, j’ai postul\u00e9 pour un programme appel\u00e9 Portail Oc\u00e9an, o\u00f9 des jeunes de partout au Canada s’engagent dans l’alphab\u00e9tisation oc\u00e9anique en participant \u00e0 des exp\u00e9ditions en milieu rural et urbain, ainsi qu’en commen\u00e7ant leurs propres projets de services locaux dans leurs communaut\u00e9s. Mon intention de participer \u00e0 ce programme \u00e9tait de miser sur mon \u00e9ducation \u00e0 l’oc\u00e9an et sur mon propre r\u00e9seau de jeunes aux vues similaires qui sont tout aussi passionn\u00e9es par la protection de la nature que moi.<\/p>\n

Dans le cadre de ce programme, j’ai d\u00e9cid\u00e9 de concentrer mon projet de service local sur le maintien des plastiques hors des cours d’eau. Bien que je vive \u00e0 la campagne, je suis \u00e9galement proche de la capitale nationale. Ainsi, l’objectif de mon projet devait \u00eatre quelque chose \u00e0 lequel les deux communaut\u00e9s pourraient se rapporter. Les gens qui vivent dans la ville peuvent ressentir une d\u00e9connexion avec la nature, car la majorit\u00e9 est entour\u00e9e de plus de b\u00e9ton que d’espaces verts. J’ai d\u00fb penser \u00e0 quelque chose de tangible qui affecte visiblement ceux qui vivent dans les deux environnements, d’o\u00f9 l’accent mis sur les plastiques.<\/p>\n

Pour mon projet principal, je ferai une galerie de photos bas\u00e9e sur des images qui montrent ce que j’ai appris non seulement des exp\u00e9ditions, mais aussi de mes exp\u00e9riences \u00e0 travers mes projets de services communautaires locaux. Le but de cette galerie est de raconter une histoire \u00e0 travers ces images et de faire en sorte que les gens se sentent soutenus \u00e0 agir eux-m\u00eames.<\/p>\n

Lorsque j’ai pris mon appareil photo pour la premi\u00e8re fois il y a deux ans, je n’aurais jamais pens\u00e9 que cela m’aurait conduit \u00e0 diriger ma propre galerie de connaissances des oc\u00e9ans. Bien que l’avenir soit incertain et que les exp\u00e9ditions puissent ou non avoir lieu cette ann\u00e9e, je continuerai d’avancer avec mon projet. Il est important de ressentir un lien avec la terre et de voir la nature comme quelque chose qui doit \u00eatre entretenu et prot\u00e9g\u00e9.<\/p>\n
