This is the third article in a three-part series focusing on <\/em>Nature Photography Day<\/em><\/a>, celebrated every year on June 15<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As a child, I dreamed of being an adventurer, a scientist, a biologist and all kinds of other imaginary careers that would allow me to spend my days in the wild studying animals and plants. Sort of a cross between Indiana Jones and Snow White\u2014and able to communicate with animals! However, I had to face the reality that I was terrible at science. As I was feeling overwhelmed in math and physics and lagging behind in biology, it was made clear that a scientific path was not opening up for me and I opted to study literature and cinema instead. But my dreams of nature had not disappeared.<\/p>\n

I was a little lost at university, but then an email from the film department changed my life. Parks Canada was looking for students to fill videographer positions during the summer. The next few weeks were a frenzy between the end of semester and the application process. Suddenly, I was packing my bags and preparing to leave the house for the first time with a small PowerShot compact camera in hand.<\/p>\n

Until that summer, I had intended to get into video production and cinema. But as I was exploring the unusual and fabulous landscapes of the islands of the Mingan archipelago, in the province of Quebec, I began to gravitate towards my camera. Suddenly, I wanted to photograph rather than film.<\/p>\n

I returned from this experience transformed; I had a new passion, and more than that, I was reconnected with my childhood dreams. My role as photographer and videographer in Mingan had opened the door to a world that I thought was inaccessible. Throughout the summer, I had met and worked with scientists and conservation officers. I had taken part in inventories of species at risk and I had documented, with my camera, the presence of many animal and plant species specific to the park’s ecosystem. I had learned their names, their characteristics and I could identify them.<\/p>\n

The following year, my grandparents gave me a DSLR camera for my graduation and my nature photography adventures started again: a second summer in Mingan, then one in Ontario, the next in Saskatchewan, and yet another in Nova Scotia. Summer after summer, I returned to Parks Canada, with my trusty camera in hand ready to photograph new species. Each of these photos, and each of the conversations they sparked, was like turning the pages of an encyclopaedia that developed before my eyes.<\/p>\n

Eight years and many adventures later, my faithful DSLR camera finally tired out, but not without having marked my journey. It is thanks to my camera and to nature photography that I was able to reconnect with my childhood imagination. With my camera, I traced my own path towards a profession in the environmental world and I now work for Parks Canada in youth engagement, helping other young people who seek to join their experiences and passions, to find a path that will lead them to the career of their dreams.<\/p>\n

There is more than one path to achieve your dreams and by persevering, you will find yours.<\/p>\n

Trouver mon propre chemin \u00e0 travers la photographie de la nature<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Enfant, je me r\u00eavais aventuri\u00e8re, scientifique, biologiste; ou toutes sortes d\u2019autres m\u00e9tiers invent\u00e9s qui me permettraient de passer mes journ\u00e9es dans la nature \u00e0 \u00e9tudier les animaux et les plantes. Un croisement entre Indiana Jones et Blanche Neige, capable de comprendre et de converser avec les animaux! Rapidement, cependant, j\u2019ai d\u00fb faire face \u00e0 la r\u00e9alit\u00e9\u00a0: j\u2019\u00e9tais nulle en sciences. Totalement d\u00e9pass\u00e9e en maths et en physique, \u00e0 la traine en bio, il \u00e9tait clair qu\u2019un parcours scientifique ne se dessinait pas devant moi et j\u2019ai donc opt\u00e9 pour des \u00e9tudes de lettres et de cin\u00e9ma. Mais mes r\u00eaves de nature ne s\u2019\u00e9taient pas \u00e9teints pour autant!<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s un d\u00e9but universitaire \u00e0 chercher ma voie, un courriel de mon d\u00e9partement de cin\u00e9ma a chang\u00e9 ma vie. Parcs Canada lan\u00e7ait un appel \u00e0 tous et \u00e0 toutes et recherchait des \u00e9tudiant.e.s pour occuper des postes de vid\u00e9ographe pendant l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9. CV, lettre de motivation, vid\u00e9o de pr\u00e9sentation, examen, apr\u00e8s quelques semaines de fr\u00e9n\u00e9sie de fin de session et de processus d\u2019application, je faisais mes valises et m\u2019appr\u00eatais \u00e0 quitter la maison pour la premi\u00e8re fois avec en main, un petit appareil photo compact PowerShot.<\/p>\n

Jusqu\u2019alors, c\u2019\u00e9tait \u00e0 la r\u00e9alisation de vid\u00e9os et au cin\u00e9ma que je me destinais. Mais cet \u00e9t\u00e9 l\u00e0, alors que j\u2019explorais les paysages insolites et fabuleux des \u00eeles de l\u2019archipel de Mingan, dans la province de Qu\u00e9bec, c\u2019est autour de mon appareil photo que je gravitais. Tout \u00e0 coup, je voulais photographier plut\u00f4t que filmer!<\/p>\n

Je suis revenue de cette exp\u00e9rience transform\u00e9e; j\u2019\u00e9tais habit\u00e9e d\u2019une nouvelle passion, et plus encore, j\u2019\u00e9tais reconnect\u00e9e avec mes r\u00eaves d\u2019enfance. Mon r\u00f4le de photographe\/vid\u00e9ographe \u00e0 Mingan m\u2019avait ouvert la porte d\u2019un monde que je pensais inaccessible. Tout au long de l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9, j\u2019avais c\u00f4toy\u00e9 et travaill\u00e9 avec des scientifiques. Ainsi, j\u2019avais pris part \u00e0 des inventaires d\u2019esp\u00e8ces en p\u00e9ril et j\u2019avais document\u00e9, avec ma cam\u00e9ra, la pr\u00e9sence de nombreuses esp\u00e8ces animales et v\u00e9g\u00e9tales propres \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cosyst\u00e8me du parc. J\u2019avais appris leurs noms, plusieurs de leurs caract\u00e9ristiques et je pouvais les identifier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

L\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante, ann\u00e9e de ma graduation, mes grands-parents m\u2019ont offert une cam\u00e9ra r\u00e9flex et mes aventures de photographie de la nature ont repris de plus belle\u00a0: un second \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 Mingan, puis un suivant en Ontario, un autre en Saskatchewan, et encore un autre en Nouvelle-\u00c9cosse. \u00c9t\u00e9 apr\u00e8s \u00e9t\u00e9, je retournais \u00e0 Parcs Canada, avec ma fid\u00e8le cam\u00e9ra en main, et \u00e9t\u00e9 apr\u00e8s \u00e9t\u00e9, je photographiais et je d\u00e9couvrais de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces. Chacune de ces photos, et chacune des conversations qu\u2019elles engendraient, devenait les pages d\u2019une encyclop\u00e9die qui s\u2019\u00e9laborait sous mes yeux.<\/p>\n

8 ans et de tr\u00e8s nombreuses aventures plus tard, ma fid\u00e8le cam\u00e9ra r\u00e9flex a finalement rendu l\u2019\u00e2me, mais pas sans avoir marqu\u00e9 mon parcours. C\u2019est gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 elle et \u00e0 la photographie de la nature, que j\u2019ai pu renouer avec l\u2019imaginaire de mon enfance, et que j\u2019ai pu tracer mon propre chemin vers un m\u00e9tier en environnement. Je travaille maintenant pour Parcs Canada en engagement jeunesse \u00e0 aider des jeunes, qui comme moi, cherchent \u00e0 concilier exp\u00e9riences et passions, et \u00e0 trouver le chemin qui les m\u00e8nera \u00e0 la carri\u00e8re de leur r\u00eave.<\/p>\n
