The Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre can often help.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">He knew what to look for because the previous summer, while working at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pc.gc.ca\/en\/pn-np\/on\/rouge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rouge National Urban Park<\/a> (RNUP) near Toronto, he had been introduced to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ontarioturtle.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ontario Turtle Conservation Centre<\/a> by his colleague, Jory Mullen, the park\u2019s ecosystems scientist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Jory is also a wildlife rehabilitator outside of work. She takes in injured wildlife, including animals found in RNUP, and cares for them using her own supplies and time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">So when Blake spotted the injured snapping turtle on the side of the road about 30 minutes into his drive, he knew exactly what to do. He carefully put the turtle in a box inside his car and called the Centre, letting them know he would swing by with it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cA half hour later, the centre called me back, and asked if I could stop and pick up another turtle that a woman had found,\u201d he says. \u201cInterestingly enough, she wanted to meet at a Parks Canada lock station in Smith Falls, along the famed Rideau Canal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Blake was happy to help. There was just a small problem: with a second turtle to deal with, he needed to make sure his hands were clean to prevent any cross-contamination. He didn\u2019t have any hand sanitizer and his one pair of gloves were already used. He stopped at a few stores he saw along the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cBut with the COVID situation, I couldn\u2019t find any at all! I wasn\u2019t sure what I was going to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When he arrived at the locks, he identified himself as a Parks Canada employee to the locks operator, John, who gave him a pair of gloves and a small bottle of sanitizer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cWith the gloves and properly sterilized, I was able to examine the two turtles more closely. It turned out that both were female, and based on my experience from last summer, I was pretty sure they were carrying eggs,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">That\u2019s when he called Jory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI knew she could tell me what to do to make sure the turtles and their eggs had a better chance at survival,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Blake was able to maintain the right temperature and make sure the turtles didn\u2019t move during the drive to the centre, ensuring that the eggs had a good chance of survival.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As Blake continued the drive to the Centre, located in Peterborough, about halfway between Ottawa and Toronto, he would pick up another four injured turtles, these one painted turtles, from the side of the road. Estimates show only about 2 percent of baby turtles make it to adulthood. That\u2019s why Blake encourages people to stop on the side of the road if they see one that is injured.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI saw lots of turtles on the side of the road, but most of them were dead. The centre is equipped to do surgery \u2013 using glue and zip ties. Even if a turtle might look dead, the people who work and volunteer there are really amazing at putting them back together,\u201d Blake says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">As a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pc.gc.ca\/en\/serapprocher-connect\/parcsavie-parkslife\/pja-yap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">youth ambassador<\/a> for Parks Canada, Blake\u2019s role is to inspire Canadian youth from all backgrounds to head outdoors and experience the rich and diverse natural and cultural heritage that Canada has to offer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI\u2019m really happy with my experience at Parks Canada because its provided me with opportunities that\u2019s more than just a job. I\u2019ve already worked with external partners who have provided a lot of insights. Elle recueille les animaux bless\u00e9s, y compris ceux du parc urbain national de la Rouge, et les soigne chez elle, \u00e0 ses frais.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Lorsque Blake a aper\u00e7u la tortue serpentine bless\u00e9e en bordure de la chauss\u00e9e, apr\u00e8s une trentaine de minutes de route, il savait exactement quoi faire. Il a soigneusement d\u00e9pos\u00e9 la tortue dans une bo\u00eete \u00e0 l\u2019int\u00e9rieur de son v\u00e9hicule et a appel\u00e9 le Centre en disant qu\u2019il passerait d\u00e9poser la tortue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00ab\u2009Une demi-heure plus tard, un employ\u00e9 du Centre m\u2019a rappel\u00e9 et m\u2019a demand\u00e9 si je pouvais ramasser une autre tortue trouv\u00e9e par une femme. Cette derni\u00e8re voulait qu\u2019on se rejoigne au poste d\u2019\u00e9clusage Smith Falls de Parcs Canada, le long du c\u00e9l\u00e8bre canal Rideau\u2009\u00bb, ajoute-t-il.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Blake \u00e9tait heureux de pouvoir pr\u00eater main-forte. Toutefois, une chose le tracassait\u00a0: avant de manipuler la deuxi\u00e8me tortue, il devait s\u2019assurer que ses mains \u00e9taient propres afin d\u2019\u00e9viter la contamination crois\u00e9e. Il n\u2019avait pas de d\u00e9sinfectant pour les mains et sa seule paire de gants \u00e9tait souill\u00e9e. Il s\u2019est donc arr\u00eat\u00e9 \u00e0 quelques magasins en chemin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00ab\u2009En raison de la pand\u00e9mie de COVID-19, je n\u2019ai rien trouv\u00e9. Je ne savais pas quoi faire\u2009\u00bb, dit-il.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Une fois arriv\u00e9 au poste d\u2019\u00e9clusage, il s\u2019est pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 en tant qu\u2019employ\u00e9 de Parcs Canada \u00e0 John, l\u2019op\u00e9rateur du poste, qui lui a remis une paire de gants et une petite bouteille de d\u00e9sinfectant.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00ab\u2009Les mains bien d\u00e9sinfect\u00e9es, j\u2019ai enfil\u00e9 les gants et examin\u00e9 les deux tortues attentivement. Il s\u2019agissait de femelles et, selon mon exp\u00e9rience de l\u2019\u00e9t\u00e9 dernier, j\u2019\u00e9tais assez certain qu\u2019elles portaient des \u0153ufs\u2009\u00bb, ajoute-t-il.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">C\u2019est \u00e0 ce moment qu\u2019il a appel\u00e9 Jory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00ab\u2009Je savais qu\u2019elle pourrait me dire comment proc\u00e9der pour assurer aux tortues et \u00e0 leurs \u0153ufs une meilleure chance de survie\u2009\u00bb, explique Blake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Il a pu maintenir les tortues \u00e0 la bonne temp\u00e9rature et s\u2019assurer qu\u2019elles ne bougent pas pendant le transport jusqu\u2019au Centre afin d\u2019augmenter les chances de survie des \u0153ufs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Tandis que Blake poursuivait sa route vers le Centre, situ\u00e9 \u00e0 Peterborough, \u00e0 mi-chemin entre Ottawa et Toronto environ, il a ramass\u00e9 quatre autres tortues bless\u00e9es en bordure de la route, des tortues peintes cette fois-ci. Il a d\u00e9pos\u00e9 les six tortues au Centre en toute s\u00e9curit\u00e9. Selon les estimations, seuls 2\u00a0% des b\u00e9b\u00e9s tortues se rendent \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge adulte. C\u2019est pourquoi Blake encourage les gens \u00e0 s\u2019arr\u00eater lorsqu\u2019ils voient des tortues bless\u00e9es.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00ab\u2009J\u2019ai vu beaucoup de tortues en bordure de la route, mais la plupart \u00e9taient mortes. Le Centre peut faire des op\u00e9rations au moyen de colle et d\u2019attaches.
