An organization in the Galapagos Islands is taking nature education to the high seas!!
Naveducando recently received the donation of the S/V Luckyfish, a 38’ Polynesian-inspired catamaran sailboat to become the first dedicated Galapagos Oceanic Classroom from 2026 onwards.
“This perfectly suited vessel is a true game-changer for our program and the Galapagos community. This dream come true is possible thanks to the vision, support and generosity of Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group, Ecoventura, and Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy,” said Noemi D’ozouville, president of Naveducando.
This Galapagos Oceanic Classroom will serve the seventh-grade students of the Galápagos Infinito program. Students will explore their Marine Reserve, learn about the gifts of the ocean and it’s mysteries, and reconnect with their island identity through hands-on ocean learning.
“It will also meet the growing need for vocational training, community learning, and sailing skills among local youth,” said Noemi. “Imagine a community of empowered youth who have experienced their oceanic island home first-hand on a sailboat, who have explored the local marine ecosystems and protected areas and who have connected with the unique geology, history and identity of the islands.”
Over the last three years, Galapagos Infinito have connected over 1,000 local Galapagos students to the ocean through immersive educational experiences, to foster their sense of place, their curiosity and love for their home and cultivate their stewardship of their home. These environments are otherwise often inaccessible to them due to the conversion of their landscape into high-cost tourist experiences.
“We hope this vessel, efficient, low-impact, and designed for simplicity and safety, will help turn ocean exploration into a lifelong commitment to protecting our blue planet,” said Noemi.
