Outdoor Play Canada launched the 2025 Position Statement on Active Outdoor Play in the September.
This updated statement builds on the original 2015 version with a broader and more inclusive vision. It reflects a global perspective, including people of all ages, cultures, and abilities, and highlights the benefits of active outdoor play not only for individuals and communities, but also for the environment.
This initiative has been an extensive and intensive three-year process, involving an international Leadership Group consisting of researchers and thought leaders from every inhabited continent, alongside a larger Steering Committee consisting of over 130 researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and other active outdoor play-relevant actors and groups.
This project celebrates a decade’s worth of global evidence on active outdoor play and includes an exploration of the relationships between active outdoor play and climate change, nature and the environment, education and learning, community and human connection, movement behaviours, health and wellbeing, and finally human rights and policy. Amongst the themes explored, the Statement also includes robust recommendations for international action across sectors, such as how play can foster a lifelong sense of environmental responsibility and care.
