A teacher of Design & Conservation Education from Assam, India is helping schools “Bee-Friend” their grounds. Inspired #NatureForAll and drawing on the Global Lessons on Greening School Grounds & Outdoor Learning project guidelines, the project led by WildRoots-India is creating green spaces in schools, particularly in areas where green spaces are scarce.

‘Bee-Friend Your Garden’ started as a local effort at Maria’s Public School, Guwahati, Assam, India, but quickly gained traction, expanding to six additional schools. Pollinator conservation and outdoor learning activities have been integrated into existing curricula, all while aligning with the mandates of the National Education Policy.

“More than 600 students participated in the initial phase, encouraging stewardship of students’ natural surroundings and a growing awareness and practical engagement in biodiversity conservation,” said teacher Dr. Biswajit De.

This type of experiential learning and collaboration is instilling a deeper connection with nature among students from diverse backgrounds.

As the project gains momentum, Dr. De & Wildroots hopes to expand and foster regional and international collaborations and enhance global visibility.

WildRoots-India projects have now reached 216 schools from both the urban and rural sectors. Educators are paving the way for a generation of environmentally conscious citizens, nurturing an appreciation for nature within the fabric of Indian education.
